Aerosmith may be the song, but I think that I will re-create a dream that I had many years ago, since I don’t often write fiction on this blog. Here goes… and you can listen to the song while you start reading! The story is as I remember it, and I am sometimes sparing with details, since I have only limited time to write. And it will seem to end on a cliffhanger… and this is because I’d rather just leave it in the form that I dreamt it.
It had been two days. Our intrepid traveler, Alex, has wandered the Owsoigh Forest, following a sequence of treasure maps. He had heard a rumor about a great treasure in this forest, and chose to go exploring. But, all he had found was maps. Not even food or water… and he had avoided some wild beasts that were not too happy by his presence.
Following the forest according to the eighth map that he had found, this seemed to lead to a clearing in the forest. It was well marked, and Alex just passed a sign that was too worn to make out what it said, but it was definitely an arrow pointing toward what looked like a walking path.
The dirt along this walking path felt hard to the shoes of Alex, which was a relief. After finding the third treasure map yesterday, the road had included some areas of quicksand. As Alex was on his own, he would have to rely on unexpected intervention should he get trapped.
Indeed, this path led out of the forest. With a relieved sigh, Alex exclaimed, “I thought I would never see a horizon with no trees on it!” Indeed, once finding the clearing, and looking at the map, it was a completely new area. Water went as far as the eyes could see. A kayak floated on a dock in front of Alex’s eyes. The sun was shining in the sky, but it was approaching evening. Alex saw, in the distance, some houses on the water. He thought, ‘I should be able to row over to those houses before it gets dark. I can’t just stay here any longer!’
Additionally, next to the dock, an arrow sign pointed toward the houses on the water… more reason for Alex to continue in this direction. As a skilled rower, he paddled through the calm waters. It seemed strange to Alex, as there was no sign of dangerous life in the water, and he was expecting treacherous travel due to his previous experiences with treasure hunts.
No difficulty came in reaching the island. At the dock, he got out of the kayak and there was yet another arrow sign. It proclaimed, “WELCOME TO TAFLIGON LIDANS,” and Alex could see ahead to a circle of what might be civilization.
The ground did not hold its own in Tafligon Lidans. It reminded Alex of when he went on a cruise years before, but luckily he was not prone to motion sickness on the high seas. As he walked forward, the brick road led to what seemed like a large ferry. Six buildings were arranged at the multiples of pi over three as Alex walked to the center of the circle. At the three-o’clock position, there appeared to be a small emporium.
The door was unlocked, but nobody was there, despite the sign that said, “Get all your food here! Open 7am-10pm. It was merely dusky, so there had to be someone around, thought Alex. Inside the emporium, there was a counter with various deli-style food items that looked rotten. On the wall to Alex’s left was a sign: “Rotten is only in the eye of the beholder,” and to the right, another treasure chest was there, just asking to be opened.
Alex opened the treasure chest, and another piece of paper was inside. It read, “Whosoever reads this piece of paper will find the Treasure that he seeks in the house of Tafligon.” There were also a few packages of beef jerky and water bottles which looked perfectly safe and usable, so Alex took them and left the emporium.
Night was beginning to fall, and Alex could feel the ground starting to bob up and down more. Clouds rapidly moved over the area, and as he walked around the circle, looking for a sign to the house of Tafligon, a sudden flash illuminated an area behind the emporium. A thunderstorm began to rage.
Cautiously, Alex pulled his trusty blade out of his backpack. Walking furtively around the emporium, he found a dock, and found a wall of black advancing on the horizon… with an electronic marquee behind him: “CAUTION–THE TREASURE IS INSIDE THE MONSTER.”
The thunderstorm intensified as The Monster approached the dock…
