[M.A.P.L.E. V-8] Ahead

As I have posted before on my blog, I love road signs. In Wisconsin, I notice on highways and Interstates that the word “ahead” appears on quite a few signs, which I have not seen in other states. And I wanted to mention something about them!

Here are a few of these “Ahead” signs, and the caption says where they are.

Wisconsin 312 / To US 53… Ahead. (On the Eau Claire beltway along WIS 312).

I-94 West / Eau Claire / St Paul Ahead. At the interchange of Interstates 90 and 94, near Tomah, Wisconsin.

The definition of the word “Ahead” is “in a forward direction” or “in the future.”

However, whenever I saw road signs prior to living in Wisconsin, I always interpreted signs that included the word “ahead” to be “dead ahead,” i.e. imminently ahead within a mile.

The first two signs that I have here are indeed indicative of “dead ahead,” as for the first one where you’re already on WI-312 and continue on the same road, and US-53 is not that much further down that road.

In the second picture, right after the WI-35 North exit, WI-35 South becomes a road concurrency with I-94 and US-12 for about 2-3 miles. Therefore, “Ahead” is appropriate there in the “Dead Ahead” sense.

The latter two, however, are not exactly “Dead Ahead” with respect to the Control Cities listed on the signs, though they are “Dead Ahead” with respect to the road.

The third picture appears on a gantry which is about 20 to 30 miles south of the outskirts of Milwaukee. Though the road to follow to get there is indeed the I-94/41, the “Ahead” might give travellers a false sense of “We’re almost there!” when in reality, there’s still quite a bit of distance to go.

And in the fourth picture, the outskirts of Eau Claire are about 75 miles away from that gantry… Tomah is at Exit 143 of I-94, and the first Eau Claire exit is at Exit 70… a discrepancy of 73 miles and about an hour! And from there, it’s another 75 miles to the St. Paul outskirts!

And though I don’t have a picture of it, on US-53 going northbound into Eau Claire/Altoona, there’s a sign which says, “US-53, Superior, Ahead.” Sure, you can follow US-53, but it’ll be a LONG time before you actually reach Superior!

Are there any other states that have “Ahead” on their signs in these senses?
