[M.A.P.L.E. V-12] Yet still available!

Yesterday, I wrote a post about the Internet failing on my computer, and trying to write a post Mobile-Style, which I found quite annoying.

As I mentioned, this was a nationwide DNS outage for Charter Communications, both on their Internet and cable-TV services. So I was certainly not the only person that was affected. I found it strange that I would just lose connection spontaneously when I didn’t download any viruses or make any configuration changes!

Yet, I was still able to post my blog post for yesterday as a result of having mobile access to the Internet via my smartphone.

It is nice that you can access the Internet from anywhere when you have a smartphone, but it certainly opens up several cans of worms. Some of the benefits and drawbacks (yes, I’m going to make this a listicle…)

  1. BENEFIT: Allows you do to quick research on anything on the spot.
Yes, this can help. For example, if you and friends go to a restaurant that looks creepy, but the menu on the outside looks so appealing. Or, to corroborate reviews that you may have previously read.
  2. DRAWBACK: Allows you to do quick research on anything on the spot.
When you are at said dinner, though I don’t fully oppose to using a phone to do quick research on a topic within conversations, I would rather just delve into it as is, misinformation and all! Dinners and outings with friends should be bereft of phone usage!
  3. BENEFIT: You can use GPS to avoid getting lost.
For an unfamiliar place, it is helpful to use the GPS capabilities on a smartphone to help you with the turn-by-turn navigation.
  4. DRAWBACK: You can use GPS to avoid getting lost.
There’s a sense of adventure when getting lost, and I think that it’s a fun feeling as long as you’re not in a bad neighborhood!
  5. BENEFIT: You can play games on your phone.
In some boring situations, such as being a passenger in a car, train, or waiting in line, you can pass the time with this.
  6. DRAWBACK: You can play games on your phone.
It tunes you out from your surroundings. You might miss an interesting conversation based on the surroundings!
  7. BENEFIT: You can use your phone to get the Internet when your computer fails for whatever reason.
This helped me to research fixes when my motherboard died or when my hard drive catastrophically failed, or to help me post the blog post yesterday. There was one time where I used my phone to research solutions to a virus infection too!
  8. DRAWBACK: You can use your phone to get the Internet when your computer fails for whatever reason.
Problems that can arise: Running out of data and going into major overage charges, continuing addiction to the screen, and more.

However, I’m not necessarily suggesting that there is a Newton’s Third Law of Smartphone Use.
