It’s been a few weeks since I have participated in Sue’s writing challenge, and I might as well do it today! Seeing the picture, and the fact that yesterday’s post was a music-based post, I think I want to do the personal “talmudic” commentary on Brian Eno’s song “Backwater,” akin to how I commented line-by-line on “The Pinnacle” many years ago.
After all, “Backwater” was salient in my mind almost exactly three years ago. (Three years and five days, to be more precise…)
And I might as well include the song mentioned for you to listen to as you read…
“Backwater, we’re sailing at the edges of time…” It sure seems like the edges of time right now, since who knows what day it actually is right now?
“Backwater, we’re drifting at the waterline…” Yep, just treading water right now with the strange times.
“Oh we’re floating in the coastal waters” On the coasts of change, that is…
“You and me and the porter’s daughters” Well, I don’t know about any porter’s daughters, but Samantha and I are along for the ride.
“Ooh what to do not a sausage to do!” Just roll with the punches… things will pass!
“And the shorter of the porter’s daughters dips her hand in the deadly waters” Oh, please stay away! Six feet minimum!
“Ooh what to do in a tiny canoe.” Ruh-roh,
“Black water, there were six of us but now we are five” Yep, just as students in my Algebra classes ask to withdraw from the course. The withdraw deadline has been extended.
“We’re all talking to keep the conversation alive” I sometimes feel like that, grasping for straws to extend a conversation. It often works!
“There was a senator from Ecuador” Oh, yikes. Politics. All over the news.
“Who talked about a meteor that crashed on a hill in the south of Peru” I feel like a meteor has crashed on more than just a hill near Peru.
“And was found by a conquistador who took it to the emperor” Corporations and Trump… the line writes itself.
“And he passed it on to a Turkish guru.” Yep, it’s starting to get political, but try a little bit north of Turkey…
“His daughter was slated for becoming divine” Sound familiar in the news? I believe so.
“He taught her… He taught her how to split and define” Hooray, now it’s time for geometric constructions and proofs!
“But if you study the logistics and heuristics of the mystics” Yes, please fact-check when you read.
“You will find that their minds rarely move in a line” Hmm, so maybe I’M a mystic!
“So it’s much more realistic to abandon such ballistics” If only some would obey this idea…
“And resign to be trapped on a leaf in a vine” Yes, like safer-at-home. I’m not resigned, though… I know it’s safest and I’m not going to protest. I believe the science!

Great song and interesting commentary. As to the last statement, “I believe the science!” well, so do I, but I find this song Before and After Science…
This one will never get old 😉

“This one,” meaning the commentary style, the song, the post, or something else?

Yes, that’s a good point! Somehow it makes me wonder if we are in the “After Science…” as much as I hate to admit it…

It’s not ‘ballistics’, not sure what it is but it’s not ‘ballistics’… 😉

Well, I took it from the lyrics, so maybe they’re wrong?

This post was a lot of fun! I took your suggestion to listen to the song while reading your responses to the lines. Very clever!

Thank you for the comment! Was it a song that you had heard prior to reading the post?
